The cause was the humidity in the crawl space.
Our client contacted Systèmes Sous-sol Québec to add a good vapor barrier membrane and clean the crawl space in order to improve the air quality and reduce the humidity.
The solution
- Addition of a SmartSump sump pump system, of a drainage membrane and a CleanSpace vapor barrier.
Most of the moisture in the crawl space comes from the earthen floor that contains water and also it might come from the walls. The SmartSump will therefore be able to remove water from the ground outside and away from the foundation. The drainage membrane, on the other hand, is placed on the ground and makes it possible to drain the water which is on the surface towards the sump pump system. The CleanSpace coating which acts as a vapor barrier is placed over the drainage membrane and blocks moisture from the ground.

Humidity in the crawl space
The heating system is unable to reduce humidity. The more humid the air, the more difficult it is to heat.
Drainage membrane
A drainage membrane is installed on the ground to direct surface water to the sump pump system.
CleanSpace coating
In order to block moisture from the floor and walls, our CleanSpace coating was installed over the drainage membrane on the floor and on the concrete foundation walls.
SmartSump Sump Pump System
Our client did not have a sump pump system. This helps to remove water from the floor and thus reduce the humidity level in the crawl space. The water is forced out and away from the foundation.
