Crawl Space Water and Humidity Fixed in Saint-Armand, QC
Challenge
A client in the Saint-Armand area contacted us by sending us the following request: "We have a problem in the crawl space. The tenants noticed the appearance of mold at the bottom of the wall on the 1st floor. In 2016 the house had been completely "stripped" and the interior was redone, I would like to fix the problem. "
The client was smart to contact us because mold means infiltration of water and/or humidity. So we sent our specialist to perform a complete crawl space inspection to identify the source of the problem and recommend the most effective crawl space encapsulation and waterproofing solution.
Solution
When our team went to do the work, they first started by removing all debris from the crawl space. Subsequently, they installed the EZ Flow crawl space drain that intercepts water that is present in the earth.
This drain is connected to a SmartSump sump pump system, a system specifically designed for crawl spaces.
Then we installed a drainage mat that redirects the water in the soil to the sump pump. On top of the drainage matting is the CleanSpace vapor barrier membrane, which blocks water vapor and redirects water and vapors to the drain. An effective vapor barrier must be very hard and thick to resist tearing and should contain an antibacterial additive to prevent mold formation on the membrane. This considerably reduces the humidity in the basement.
The most important element in this customer's case is the SaniDry CX dehumidifier, which helps to eliminate all sources of moisture that cause mold growth. This dehumidifier is a very powerful system that filters and dries air throughout the crawl space and redistributes. This reduces the relative humidity to the recommended level (50%) and drastically improves the quality of the air in the basement. It also improves the upper floors, because the humidity tends to rise with the air taking with it bacteria, mites, and traces of fungi and molds.
Finally, so that all these efforts don’t go in vain, it is necessary to close the slots and ventilators of the crawl space. Open hatches let in water and moisture, which hinders dehumidification efforts.
We are pleased to have been able to address this owner's moisture problem and improve the quality of the tenants' environment.
