Encapsulating a Crawl Space in Saint-Bernard-De-Michaudville, Quebec
Challenge
Background: Home featured both a basement and a crawl space, and homeowners were experiencing persistent issues with excess moisture, cold drafts, and unpleasant odors spreading from downstairs. The basement floor was often damp, and the crawl space had visible signs of moisture accumulation.
Solution
Solution Overview: We proposed a multi-tiered solution that involved moisture management, encapsulation, and humidity control. The key elements of this solution included the installation of a SuperSump, CleanSpace drainage matting and vapor barrier, SilverGlo, and a SaniDry Sedona dehumidifier.
1. SuperSump Sump Pump System: Used to tackle the persistent dampness within the basement area. This advanced sump pump is designed to effectively channel water outside of the basement before it can cause damage. We placed the pump in a carefully selected low point in the basement, ensuring that any water infiltrating the space would be directed toward it.
2. CleanSpace Drainage Matting and Vapor Barrier: In the crawl space, moisture was coming up from the ground due to a lack of proper encapsulation. To address this, we installed CleanSpace Drainage Matting across the crawl space floor. This specially designed membrane creates a channel for water to flow underneath the vapor barrier, directing it to the sump pump. After the drainage matting was in place, we installed above it the CleanSpace Vapor Barrier. This heavy-duty barrier is a highly durable material that forms an airtight seal, preventing moisture from rising up from the soil. By fully encapsulating the crawl space with the CleanSpace system, we created a controlled environment that inhibits moisture entry, and thus reduces mold risk.
3. SilverGlo Thermal Insulation: It is the perfect product for the crawl space walls. SilverGlo is a rigid foam insulation board enhancing its insulation properties by reflecting heat back into the space. This thermal insulation plays a crucial part in improving energy efficiency and reducing heating costs. The insulation was installed ensuring that there were no gaps where cold air might penetrate.
4. SaniDry Sedona Dehumidifier: For maximizing humidity control, our SaniDry Sedona Dehumidifier was the "cherry on top". The SaniDry Sedona is a high-efficiency, compact dehumidifier that removes moisture from the air and prevents the growth of mold and mildew. With its powerful yet energy-efficient operation, it keeps the regulates humidity ensuring that the basement and crawl space remain dry and free from musty odors.
Conclusion: By combining the installation of the SuperSump sump pump system, CleanSpace Encapsulation system, SilverGlo, and SaniDry Sedona, we successfully resolved the homeowner's moisture, cold, and odor issues within his basement and crawl space.
